How are the CSA results used?

The results of the CSA serve a wide range of applications ranging from Indices to asset management and from company benchmarking to sustainability-linked loans.

Sustainable investment products

Index basedThe Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) family of indices using the Total Sustainability Score and new sustainability indices like S&P ESG Indices (e.g. S&P 500 ESG, Global 1200 ESG, Europe 350 ESG) using smart ESG scores, or indices that use scores at criteria level like the S&P Long-Term Value Creation Index or the JPX/S&P CAPEX & Human Capital Index. Assets under license in these products exceed USD 5bn. 

Asset Management – The CSA results inform the investment strategy of over USD 105 billion of AUM (assets under management) in the Robeco group alone.

Smart ESG – Using the information collected through our annual CSA RobecoSAM’s Quantitative Research team developed an innovative “Smart ESG” scoring methodology. RobecoSAM has recently taken a decision to license Smart ESG scores and is in the process of making them available in 2019.

Informing investment decisions

The CSA establishes a ranking of companies that are available to asset managers to inform their investment decision without the need to copy the exact weighting of an index. DJSI component lists and company rankings resulting from the CSA are made available free of through the following channels:

DJSI component lists – Many stakeholders use the DJSI component lists to identify leading companies and make sustainability-focused investment decisions. The DJSI company list is downloaded at a rate of once per hour on average. 

RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook – The annual Sustainability Yearbook provides more insight, ranking the top performing 15% of companies, measured by their Total Sustainability Score in the CSA,  into gold, silver and bronze medal winners. The yearbook online database is accessed on average 100'000 times per year.

Bloomberg – since 2016, percentile rankings of all assessed companies (over 4500) are available to a growing number of mainstream and ESG-focused investors. The Bloomberg platform has over 300'000 subscribers with over 12'000 active users of ESG data.

Sustainability-linked loans

Sustainability-linked loans or credit facilities tie a risk premium to the borrower’s ESG performance. A company’s sustainability commitment (or CSA results) can be leveraged in combination with Sustainability-linked loans. Companies assessed in the CSA can contact RobecoSAM to issue a certificate that confirm a company's performance in the CSA to the company's credit provider. Company Benchmarking

Thousands of non-financial stakeholders ranging from academia and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to your customers and (future) employees are interested in the sustainability performance of companies use the CSA as a credible, independent source of information.

DJSI Component lists – The list of DJSI member companies of the different Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) are available for download to all stakeholders. 

RobecoSAM Sustainability YearbookEach year, we publish the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook - the world’s most comprehensive publication on corporate sustainability - based on information collected through the CSA.

Academic Activities

RobecoSAM has implemented a proactive approach to developing its research partnerships with academic institutions. The purpose of these research collaborations is to strengthen RobecoSAM’s position as a thought leader within the Sustainability Finance industry, capitalize on the value of RobecoSAM’s proprietary database and further develop its cutting-edge methodology for integrating sustainability into the investment process. Within this framework, RobecoSAM focuses on extensive collaboration with and sponsorship of selected academic institutions.
