Engaging to tackle the waste caused by plastics that are only used once is a key engagement theme for the second half of 2019. Engagement specialist Sylvia van Waveren explains how Robeco is working to encourage plastic packaging companies to move to a circular economy model, including collaborations with many other interested groups.

Single-use plastic also relates to another engagement theme – reducing global waste. The world’s waste mountain is growing higher every day, with the focus now on not producing it rather than trying to recycle it. Active Ownership analyst Robert Dykstra explains what this means for companies and how they can be part of the solution.

Robeco’s Active Ownership team conducts engagement and voting activities across all Robeco and RobecoSAM portfolios. The team works closely with RobecoSAM’s Sustainability Investing Research in defining engagement themes and researching engagement cases.

Voting and engagement

With the main voting season over, Active Ownership analysts Cedric Hille and Laura Bosch shed light on two main takeaways, the trending topics of cybersecurity and CEO successions. Both are rapidly developing threats to the corporate governance of the companies that figure in Robeco’s voting approaches.

Progress made on improving corporate governance in Japan is outlined by senior engagement specialist Ronnie Lim, who reflects on the outcome of engagement in this arena. The safety of mining tailings dams in Brazil is a concern, so Van Waveren explains how an investor initiative that Robeco helps run is acting to prevent further disasters.

The social risks of sugar, and the lobbying programs designed to protect vested corporate interests, are tackled in an updated report. Two years after Robeco began an engagement program with food and beverage companies, engagement specialist Peter van der Werf shares our findings regarding Robeco’s objective to secure responsible lobbying.
