The social impact of artificial intelligence and digital innovation in health care were among four new engagement themes launched in 2019. In the Q4 report, Danielle Essink details how the rise of AI holds many benefits, but is also accompanied by many risks. For health care, Anouk in ‘t Veld describes the team’s plans for their engagement on this unique opportunity.

In the ongoing debate about climate change, the high carbon-producing real estate sector continues to be one of the largest contributors to global warming. Sylvia van Waveren provides an update on engagement in the Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) sector.

Robeco’s Active Ownership team conducts engagement and voting activities across all Robeco and RobecoSAM portfolios. The team works closely with RobecoSAM’s Sustainability Investing Research in defining engagement themes and researching engagement cases.

Complex issues

Food security is another hot topic for investors. After one year of engaging companies on this difficult challenge, Peter van der Werf reviews the progress made so far, and highlights the next steps to be taken.

Tax Accountability is another complex subject. As the team’s engagement on tax accountability draws to a close, Michiel van Esch reflects on the successes and the obstacles that remain.

Finally, an update on voting highlights is given by Robert Dykstra and Laura Bosch, who explain how the US Securities and Exchange Commission plans to apply stricter rules about proposal filings and the use of proxy advisors.

The report also contains its usual summary of the fourth quarter in numbers, detailing the team’s engagement and voting statistics over the quarter.
